Review of Piecebox
It’s late at night and I am lying in bed with a piece of lemon drizzle cake as I write. Don’t judge me. You’d be doing the same if you’d just bought 6 variations of cake from the Piecebox.
Piecebox is a neighbourhood café, handily situated near my house in Polwarth, Edinburgh. Named after the Scottish word for lunchbox, the licensed café has been working its magic since 2011, providing locals with the best brunch grub in the city.
Finding a wooden vintage looking table on which to perch, isn’t easy at the weekend, but it’s so worth the 10 minute wait for the sigh-inducing range of comfort food on offer.
The menu is full of so much deliciousness. Chose from smashed avocado and sourdough toast, a stack of homemade pancakes with seasonal fruits, or my personal favourite, the sweet potato and courgette fritter stack (with some juicy bangers on the side of course). All your breakfast and brunch staples are there too, along with a range of mouth-watering burgers and club sandwiches. This weekend I opted for my usual with a freshly made Berry Delight smoothie, whilst my friend went for the breakfast pizza and a pot of tea to wash it all down. Couldn’t be faulted as usual.
If you aren’t in a food coma by the time you finish all of that, then I highly trying some of their homemade cakes or taking some home with you (6 pieces was extreme I know, I know). Chose from blueberry slice, to raspberry and white chocolate loaf or chocolate covered strawberry cake. Most include fruit so 1 of your 5 a day I’m guessing?!
The Piecebox is true civilisation in spotted teapots and glass-topped cases of cakes; in lightly varnished wood and vintage gold mirrors. The décor is divine, as are the staff. A friendly and welcoming team, they always work hard to produce the goods even when the café is packed full. You feel at ease to sit and chat for a few hours with friends or read the papers unlike some other brunch establishments that I have recently tried.
All in all, I love the food, I love the location and I love the staff. It’s a goodie and I won’t be moving away from it anytime soon.
