Meet the Team – Ben
Ben is our Senior Content Producer, bringing with him a wealth of experience in social media and content production. Primarily getting stuck into photography and video, Ben also contributes to strategy and client management for brands like Brewgooder & When In Rome Wine.
After studying photography at university, Ben sought to start to make a living from his passion and saw social media as an opportunity to do exactly that. After undertaking a social media internship in China he realised how much creative influenced the success of social campaigns and was hooked.
After running the social channels in house for a few companies in Edinburgh, Ben decided to start his own company called Get Give Creative, which offered social media support and consulting. But he missed working in a team and the agency environment... and after a chat with Jenny decided to join Sunshine.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Sunshine Communications?
I can’t pick one just yet, maybe that will come with time. But, I suppose my favourite things so far all surround the reason I came to work at Sunshine in the first place; a great team, a very high quality of work and a sense of purpose. It’s really refreshing to come into a workplace that’s so open and welcoming too. One of the things I missed most when working by myself was that sense of teamwork, so it’s great to be part of that now.
What’s your favourite quote?
“In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.”Ralph Waldo Emerson Poet & Philosopher
It’s actually a quote I saw whilst reading another book and it’s stuck with me. I don’t pretend to have anything as grand as a personal philosophy – but if I did, this would probably be the closest thing to it.
Listening and removing any sense of overarching self-importance is the best way to start any new conversation and learn from it.
What’s your favourite social media platform?
I’m a big fan of Instagram, I actually wrote my dissertation on the role it has in preserving photography’s role in art and I’m on the Facebook IV drip like anyone else.
My favourite platform to use is Snapchat, I love it’s instant nature and the focus on fun, especially the VR. I look great with bunny ears too. I’m a big fan of using music or podcasts for advertising too.
When I’m not working you’ll find me…
I do love my craft beer and there is loads of great places around Edinburgh to drink it, so usually at the bar (lads, lads, lads). Otherwise, I’ll be in a hipster coffee shop or taking part in some sporting endeavour.
What would be at the top of your bucket list?
It’s a bit naff, but I’ve always wanted to travel Route 66 across America in a classic sports car. Cars are my guilty pleasure and there is just something about that open road. I grew up on road trip movies, so that’s next anyway, but I’d love to do some more travelling in Africa.
